May marks the start of the riding season for many motorcyclists across the country, making it the perfect time to highlight motorcycle safety. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reminds everyone that Motorcyclists’ Safety Is Everyone’s Safety. Whether you’re behind the handlebars or the wheel, we all have a role to play in keeping our roads safe.
Why Motorcycle Safety Matters
Motorcyclists are more vulnerable on the road than other drivers, and the statistics prove it. In 2022, 6,218 motorcyclists lost their lives in traffic crashes—a tragic number that underscores the need for increased awareness and responsible road behavior. Two major contributors to these fatalities were speeding and alcohol impairment. In fact, 35% of motorcyclist fatalities involved excessive speed, and 42% of motorcycle riders who died in single-vehicle crashes were alcohol-impaired.
Additionally, many people rely on motorcycles not just for leisure but as their main or only mode of transportation. That makes motorcycle safety an everyday priority—not just something to think about on occasional rides.
What You Can Do to Stay Safe
Motorcyclists and drivers alike can help reduce accidents and fatalities by following safe riding and driving practices:
✅ Obey speed limits and all traffic laws.
✅ Never ride or drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
✅ Stay alert and avoid distractions when driving or riding.
✅ Yield to motorcyclists when turning, especially at intersections.
✅ Wear a DOT-compliant motorcycle helmet and high-visibility protective gear.
Helmet use is a simple yet life-saving choice. Studies show that helmets saved 1,872 motorcyclists’ lives in 2017, and an additional 749 lives could have been saved if all riders had worn one. Make the smart decision—gear up for safety.
Take Safety to the Next Level
One of the most effective ways to improve motorcycle safety is through rider education and training courses. Whether you’re a new rider or an experienced motorcyclist, honing your skills can make all the difference in staying safe on the road.
