Whether you’re cracking open a brand new notebook or pulling the same old backpack out of the closet, there’s something powerful about the start of a new school year.
It’s more than just schedules, syllabi, and school supplies, it’s a chance to reset, refocus, and decide how you want this year to go.
Back to School — Starts with Intention
No matter your role – student, educator, administrator, parent, prevention coordinator – you can set the tone for a school year that prioritizes safety, leadership, and smart decision-making.
The choices we make, especially in the early weeks of school, set the trajectory for the months ahead. That means how we show up now matters.
So ask yourself:
- What kind of year do I want to have?
- What kind of leader do I want to be?
- What kind of impact do I want to make?
Good Choices = Prevention in Action
Prevention isn’t just something that happens in assemblies or health classes. It happens in hallways, at lunch tables, on the sidelines, and in group chats. It happens every time someone chooses to speak up, or support a friend who’s struggling.
Good choices aren’t about being perfect. They’re about being prepared, being informed, and being the kind of person others can count on.
Whether you’re deciding not to get in a car with someone who’s impaired, choosing to look out for a classmate who’s been left out, or leading by example when no one’s watching—you’re practicing prevention.
And that’s a win.
Peer Leadership is Powerful
- Students: You don’t need a title to be a leader.
- Educators: You don’t need a badge to make a difference.
- Parents: You don’t need to be perfect to be present.
The truth is, peer-led prevention is one of the most effective ways to shift school culture and reduce risky behaviors. When students lead with authenticity and purpose—others follow. When adults create safe, inclusive environments for conversations to happen—students show up.
Let’s not underestimate the ripple effect of one student choosing the right path—or one adult who refuses to give up on them.
This Year is a Do-Over and a Level-Up
If last year didn’t go as planned—this is your reset.
If last year was your best yet—this is your chance to level up.
Start small. Speak up. Show up.
And remember: you don’t have to do it alone.
At Drive to Save Lives, we believe in the power of connection, storytelling, and education to spark lasting change. Let’s make this school year one that raises the bar—not just for grades and goals, but for how we show up for each other.
