Prom is a magical time for high school students—a night of celebration and joy.
However, it can also come with risks, particularly those related to drinking and driving.
One initiative that encourages students to have safe, memorable nights during this magical time is Prom Promise. This program inspires students to commit to sober and responsible behavior during prom season. Learn more on The Prevention Network’s Prom Promise page.
How Schools Can Engage
Prom Promise Pledge: Encourage students to sign a pledge committing to staying sober on prom night. Make the pledge ceremony meaningful by linking it to a pre-prom event or assembly. Alternatively, host the signing during prom ticket sales.
Safe Ride Programs: Partner with local transportation companies to offer discounted or free rides for students on prom night. This initiative can help reduce the temptation to drive under the influence.
Prom-Themed Contest: Organize a creative contest—such as designing a Prom Promise logo or creating a poster that illustrates the importance of safety. This could also highlight the many ways to have fun while staying sober during prom season. Display the winners’ work at prom or other school events.
Host a Lock-In Sober Prom Night Event: With support from Booster Club or PTA fundraising and local businesses, host a lock-in event at an amusement park, bowling alley, or Airpark. Include food, activities, and prizes. Offer discounted tickets to help cover costs for an all-night “party” full of fun and excitement.
Let’s work together to make this prom season a celebration to remember—for all the right reasons.
