Supporting Safe Celebrations: MADD’s Holiday Campaigns

For many, the holidays are a season of joy, connection, and celebration. For Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), they’re also a time to double down on one message: always plan a safe way home.

Each year, MADD launches its powerful Tie One On for Safety® campaign – one of the longest-running public awareness initiatives in the U.S. to encourage drivers to make safe choices during the holiday season.

What “Tie One On for Safety®” Means

You may have seen red ribbons on cars, keychains, or community vehicles. These ribbons serve as a reminder to:

  • Designate a sober driver
  • Never drive impaired
  • Support victims and survivors of impaired driving

It’s a symbol of commitment and an invitation for others to join in.

Why Holiday Impaired Driving Prevention Matters

Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, impaired driving crashes reach some of the highest numbers of the year. Alcohol, cannabis, and other drugs all impact reaction time, judgement, and coordination, making celebrations a vulnerable time for youth and adults alike.

MADD’s approach reinforces the idea that safety isn’t about restriction, it’s about responsibility. Planning ahead keeps the holidays joyful instead of tragic.

How Schools & Communities Can Participate

  • Encourage students to pledge to drive and ride sober
  • Display red ribbons in hallways, parking lots, law enforcement vehicles, and community centers
  • Share information through morning announcements, newsletters, or assemblies
  • Invite prevention speakers or survivor advocates to share real stories
  • Include designated-driver messaging at winter dances and events

This holiday season, let’s choose safety together and to always plan a safe ride home.
