Impaired Driving Awareness Month is an opportunity to educate and empower students, educators, and the community to make safe driving choices throughout the month of December. By promoting education, peer support, and community involvement, high schools can play a pivotal role in reducing impaired driving incidents and keeping roads safer.

Understanding the Risks

Impaired driving is a leading cause of car crashes and fatalities. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2022, 13,524 people died in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, accounting for 32% of all traffic-related deaths in the United States. These statistics highlight the need for increased education and preventive measures, especially among young drivers.

Promoting Safe Driving Habits

To promote safe driving habits during Impaired Driving Awareness Month, schools can take several proactive measures. Schools can organize educational programs and workshops that highlight the dangers of impaired driving, utilizing resources from organizations like Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Hosting events like awareness walks, and using impairment goggles to simulate the effects of alcohol and drugs on driving, can provide practical insights.

Schools can also invite speakers from the Drive to Save Lives program to discuss topics such as “One Decision, One Choice,” the consequences of impaired driving. Additionally, implementing peer-led initiatives, such as Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), or Teens in the Driver Seat can foster a supportive environment where students encourage each other to make safe choices.

Let’s work together this month to ensure that every student understands the importance of not riding with a impaired driver, choosing to be a sober driver and the impacts impaired driving or riding can have on their lives and the lives of others.

Stay safe, stay informed, and drive responsibly. Together, we are stronger.
