Back to School Lessons
Heading back to school after summer feels exciting and confusing and scary and fun all at the same time. The new school year brings new opportunities and challenges, and its a great time to hit the “reset” button and get a fresh start. As you prepare for your next year of school, keep these things in mind.
You are Not Always Going to Be Cool
Achieving coolness is probably near the top of your list of the most important things in life right now, but no one is cool all the time. Everyone has face-palm moments, everyone gets a breakout, and no one knows the right thing to say all the time. You’ll save a lot of time, energy and worry when you realize that and make peace with it. You will do and say ridiculous things that make you turn red and want to hide in the bathroom during lunch, but I promise that you won’t die of embarrassment. So go easy on yourself, and stop being your own worst critic.
Hold On to Who You Are
It’s easy to get caught up in what’s cool or popular in high school, but don’t lose yourself in the process. Remember what makes you you, nourish it and embrace it.
Get Involved
School is certainly about getting an education, but sometimes the most important lessons are learned outside the classroom. Join clubs, volunteer or sign up for a sport. You’ll meet new people, gain leadership opportunities, develop your interests and open the doors to a whole new world.
Be Kind
Start by being kind to yourself, then extend that to others. Stand up for your friends, speak up for strangers and lift others up instead of knocking them down. You never know just how far a little kindness can go, and showing compassion can change someone’s life.
